Water Lab Explanations

TDS: Primary sources for TDS in receiving waters are agricultural runoff and residential (urban) runoff, clay-rich mountain waters, leaching of soil contamination, and point source water pollution discharge from industrial or sewage treatment plants. The most common chemical constituents are calcium, phosphates, nitrates, sodium, potassium, and chloride, which are found in nutrient runoff, general stormwater runoff and runoff from snowy climates where road de-icing salts are applied.

Alkalinity: Total alkalinity (TA) is the measure of water's ability to neutralize acids. Alkaline compounds that are present in water, like hydroxides and carbonates, eliminate H+ ions from the water, which lowers the acidity of the water and results in a higher pH.

Hardness: is most expressed as milligrams of calcium carbonate equivalent per litre. Water containing calcium carbonate at concentrations below 60 mg/l is generally considered as soft; 60–120 mg/l, moderately hard; 120–180 mg/l, hard; and more than 180 mg/l, very hard

(McGowan, 2000).

Turbidity: is the measure of relative clarity of a liquid. It is an optical characteristic of water and is a measurement of the amount of light that is scattered by material in the water when a light is shined through the water sample. ... Turbidity is measured in Nephelometric Turbidity

Units (NTU).

Result

According to “Drinking Water Health Standards” (Ministry of Health 2001), Enclosure 4A “Sanitary Standard of Hygienic Safety and Function of Drinking Water’s Water Treatment Device – General Devices” to do hygiene and safety inspection.

The result shows that: the test result about chromaticity, Turbidity, Odor, Visible inclusions, Oxygen consumption (calculated as CO2), Lead, Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Mg), Six valency, Chromium, Arsenic (As), Volatile phenol, total Bacterial, total Coliforms, Fecal Coliforms etc. and all are to the Standard –“Drinking Water Health Standards” (Ministry of Health 2001) Enclosure 4A “Sanitary Standard of Hygienic Safety and Function of Drinking Water’s Water Treatment Device – General Devices” about the General Devices.
